Ghost Walk With Us

Our Saturday Night Ghost Walk has become an Opeongo tradition. Each Saturday night from mid June through Labor Day a creature of the night emerges from the dark to lead the unsuspecting on an adventure in terror. By flickering torch light they proceed through the night to the secret Ghostly Glen where original spooky stories are told. The Specter weaves its spell only to disappear leaving its victims to find their way back to the light. On the way back anything can happen.

Once a year on Labor Day weekend a special Super Ghost Walk takes place and the woods run wild with demons and strange effects. Many have seen it but few have lived to tell the tale...

Bob Peltzer has been creating and telling ghost stories since 1973 when he created the story of Matthew's Arm to entertain two restless kids on a camping trip. Around the evening campfire they asked why the campground was called Matthew's Arm? Borrowing an idea from an old television show Bob spun a tale of murder and a vengeful arm that prowled the very campground in which they were to sleep. No two kids were ever more eager to get into the camper and pull the sleeping bags over their heads.

Later, as a teacher with a group of inner city kids on their first overnight camping trip, he combined scary stories with an after dark, no flashlights walk. The kids had spent the trip out whispering about the tricks they were going to play on each other throughout the night. Since Bob had borrowed the tents and other equipment from friends and family these whispered pranks caught his ear and gave him visions of ripped tents and smashed lanterns. Remembering the kids at Matthew's Arm, Bob decided to combine entertainment with a bit of psychology. As his night time walk began its return to the camp Bob just happened to remember a story someone had told him about the nearby canal tunnel being haunted. The kids pressed for more details which Bob reluctantly allowed them to draw out of him. As they walked a story unfolded that seemed fantastic yet all too real by the time they returned to their campsite within sight of the now haunted tunnel. As with the kids at Matthew's Arm, these kids were eager to get under protective covers and into the safe arms of sleep. The next morning, their bravery restored, the kids asked if they could go on another "ghost walk" that evening and Bob realized that he had the beginnings of great idea. Over the next five years these Ghost Walks became a much anticipated part of every camping trip he organized.

In 1986 when Bob purchased Opeongo Mountain Resort he immediately adopted his Ghost Walks as a regularly weekly event. The first few years the groups were small and Bob would make up and tell the stories as he walked. The popularity of the Ghost Walks grew along with the business and soon Bob had to adapt his methods to handle the larger groups of campers and cottagers that began to show up each Saturday night. A "Ghostly Glen" was created to allow groups of up to 30 or so to gather close to the flicker of lamp light and hear the tales. Makeup and costumes were added which allowed Bob to transform himself into a different ghoulish host each week. Still, the stories are the core of the walk and it takes quite an effort to get larger groups to suspend disbelief and allow themselves to be scared. However, Bob has learned a number of tricks over the years and even adults jaded by years of horror films occasionally succumb to that youthful wish to be scared.
