Jumping Frog Contest sign

2011

Ever since Mark Twain wrote his jumping frog story folks around the world have been holding frog jumping contests. The Opeongo version of this contest requires that all frogs be properly named, professionally handled and humanely treated. Every frog is released back into his or her environment as soon as the contest is over. Awards are given in unique categories that usually match the number of frogs entered. Everyone, including the frogs, seems to have a good time.

Below are some photos from this year's contest.

The Competitors

20 frogs and frog handlers competed this year and competitors were required to provide names for all frogs entered. Sometimes the same frog jumps twice under a different name but only the frogs are completely sure on this matter. Above, Bob signs up the competitors and explains the rules

The Competition

A new motivational technique the "frog tickler" was tried this year with mixed success.

One frog was very reluctant to move so Bob tried his bag of tricks with limited success.

While friends and family watch the frog handlers work their magic and chase down the results.

Some handlers work well on their own while others need an assist from dad.

To see some jumpers, you need your glasses.

A proud handler displays his educated frog and another contestant learns that this is a frog only event. (But I would have loved to see that turtle jump!)

Awards and Prizes

Each frog and handler receive a hand lettered certificate for one of our "Celebrity or Corporate Sponsor Awards".

For example: There is the Owner / Handler look alike award as well as the KISS Award for the tongue longer than Gene Simmons.
There is even a Miss Piggy Award for the most kissable frog lips, Every frog goes away with something.

For the top 4 jumpers there is prize money but somehow we know that the frogs will see none of it.

Another successful frog jumping contest goes into the books with all contestants released unharmed back into the wild.
