Jumping Frog Contest sign

2010

Ever since Mark Twain wrote his jumping frog story folks around the world have been holding frog jumping contests. The Opeongo version of this contest requires that all frogs be properly named, professionally handled and humanely treated. Every frog is released back into his or her environment as soon as the contest is over. Awards are given in unique categories that usually match the number of frogs entered. Everyone, including the frogs, seems to have a good time.

Below are some photos from this year's contest.

The Competitors

Close to 35 frogs and frog handlers competed this year and competitors were required to provide names for all frogs entered. Sometimes the same frog jumps twice under a different name but only the frogs are completely sure on this matter.

The Competition

Frogs and handlers of all sizes compete in this event.

First you place your frog & then you make it go without touching it. Various methods are used to acomplish this and some frog handlers need a bit of assistance. At the end of the event, no frogs are injured and the handler who undertook to best "ed-u-kate is frog" stood the best chance of winning. (Provided that no one fed the others a bag of shot when no one was looking!)

Awards and Prizes

Each frog and handler receive a hand letter certificate for one of our "Celebrity or Corporate Sponsor Awards".

For example: There is the Owner / Handler look alike award as well as the KISS Award for the tongue longer than Gene Simmons.
Even the winner of the Miss Piggy Award for the most kissable frog lips, goes away with something..

The top 4 jumpers take home some cash along with their awards and smiles can be seen on every face!

Release Back Into the Wild

All frog are released after the competition none the worse for the experience and possibly proud of their accomplishments.
