Fishing on Lake Clear

The clean, fresh waters of Lake Clear are home to a variety of game fish sure to delight anglers of every description. You don't need to be an Ike Walton or Roland Martin to enjoy the fishing. Pike, walleye, smallmouth bass and lake trout are all found in our waters. In addition; pan fish such as rock bass, bluegill and yellow perch are easily caught from shore.

Smallmouth Bass

Probably one of the most exciting things that you can do at age 6 or 60 is to hook into one of Lake Clear's fighting smallmouth. Pound for pound they are probably one of nature's greatest thrills. Lake Clear smallmouth average two and one half to three pounds. Four and five pound smallmouth, while not as frequently caught, are not uncommon.

Our bass season opens the fourth Saturday in June and runs through November 30. Fishing is best during the first couple of weeks but can slow down quickly during the hot weather. Late August and September bring the strikes back on with a vengeance and provide some of the best fishing and scenery of year. Give the photo on the left a click if you want proof that you don't need a thousand dollars worth of equipment and years of experience to land the big ones!

Walleye

Catch and release photo of a walleye

The newest and most exciting fishery to our lake is the walleye fishery. Walleye are not native to Lake Clear but, were introduced a few years ago as part of a lake trout management strategy. During that time they have adapted well to our lake and have become one of our most popular species. Special conservation restrictions apply to our walleye population with a 20 inch minimum size limit and a two fish limit being strongly enforced. (The limit is one fish if you have a conservation fishing license)

Walleye are our most actively biting fish with good catches from the third Saturday in May opening day through to the winter. Fishing is best in the early morning and late evening. Quarter ounce jigs with nightcrawlers or scent bait are the most productive lures; but, when they are hitting hot they will hit a hang nail.

Because this species was intended to be a conservation fishery we suggest that Lake Clear walleye anglers be prepared to do a lot of catch and release fishing. They are easily caught and a lot of fun, but, most will have to be released because of our special restrictions. Hey, that's what most of us are into anyway.

Northern Pike

Godfather of the Lake Clear fish species, the northern pike is responsible for more stories about the big one that got away than nearly any other fish in our lake. These hard biting brutes are true bandits of the blue, ready to snap the line of the angler that gives them too much slack at the wrong time. Their season opens along with walleye on the third Saturday in May and continues on through the winter. Best fishing is found from opening day through the end of June, with action picking up again in late August and September. Minnows and minnow like artificials are the best bait.

Lake Trout

If the pike is the godfather of Lake Clear fish than the lake trout is surely king. These tasty fish of the char family were once the top sport fish in the region. However, years of overfishing and habitat loss have removed them from their most favoured position. This trend is now being reversed. With the introduction of walleye to aid in habitat redevelopment and the institution of special conservation regulations, this species is making a comeback.

Most of the season these fish are found in sixty foot or more of water and extremely difficult to catch. They are a true test of an angler's skill and dedication. However, those in the know have been known to find them lurking in the shallows or near the surface in the early morning.

Pan Fish

Just what can I say? We have a ton of them. They are easily caught. Sophisticated anglers turn up their noses at the thought of them. But, folks who know good eating when they find it will walk past a plate of bass to dig into a snack of perch!

Licenses

We sell all Ontario fishing licenses at our office

Ontario has one of the most reasonable fishing license programs in North America and one that promotes conservation ethics. Residents of Ontario may purchase a year's fishing for $27.76 or pay the reduced price of $15.90 if they agree to abide by special conservation creel limits. In addition, they must pay a $9.68 fee for a credit card sized "Outdoor Card" to hold their yearly sticker. This card is good for 3 years. Those who do not have the card are issued a temporary license until the card arrives in the mail..

Residents of other Canadian provinces can purchase licenses for prices ranging from $31.00 to $51.77 (Conservation & Full Limit license prices) Plus $9.68 for the Outdoors Card if they don't already have one. Prices shown are in Canadian dollars.

Non residents of Canada can purchase licenses ranging from a $28.84 conservation license which is good for 8 days, to a $78.18 full season, full limit license. In between are a number of other options designed to fit most needs and budgets. . Prices shown are in Canadian dollars.

Both resident and non-resident conservation licenses offer a discounted rate for those anglers who practice catch and release fishing. For example, if you were allowed a limit of six pike on a regular license, the limit on the conservation license would be two. It is a nice way of encouraging that which most responsible anglers have been trying to promote for years. These special limits vary for different species and on different lakes. You can find the latest information at the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources' Let's Fish Ontario website.
